Texts in the broadest sense of the word, and their
contexts, are central to the English Learning Area. Students read,
listen to, and view a vast array of texts. In addition students will
practise creating and constructing a variety of texts, written,
spoken and visual, in their years at school.
In English students learn how texts are constructed
to achieve a purpose with a particular audience in mind. Students
learn to interpret and respond to texts with critical awareness.
Students also learn to compose their own texts, oral, written and
multi-modal in order to communicate their different purposes to a
variety of audiences.
Each Key Idea in the English Learning Area
describes the texts that teachers might use, or ask students to
create, to provide an appropriate learning activity at a particular
year level. Examples of these texts are included with details of
their possible content, structure, length, and the language
employed. Where possible the same text type has been used across
different year levels to reveal how it might look different, or be
used in a different way at different year levels.
The following English learning activities are not
meant to be prescriptive. They describe starting points for further
learning opportunities. The learning experiences described reflect
an analysis of the Key Ideas and build towards achieving the related
learning Outcomes.
