The science learning area is divided into 4 strands, Earth and
space, Energy systems, Life systems and
Matter. Each of these is underpinned by two Key Ideas which
identify the key foci of the strand.
The strands are based upon the notion of accepted ‘disciplines’
of science but there are important connections to be made across the
strands when planning a science program. This will maximise
opportunities for the learner to access a range of learning options from
all major areas of science.
Implicitly in each of these activities, there is an element of the
process of Working scientifically as well as examples of
how the Essential Learnings, Equity Cross- curriculum Perspectives and
Enterprise and Vocational Education areas are integral to the learning.
When developing these activities at the local level, it is essential to
further enrich these elements.
The following Science learning activities are not meant to be
prescriptive. They describe starting points for further learning
opportunities. The learning experiences described reflect an analysis of
the Key Ideas and build towards achieving the related learning Outcomes.
